The AKC/Eukanuba American Dog Classic is a brand new event dedicated to showcasing the top dogs in each breed in America . The American Kennel Club has hosted only three other shows in its 117-year history. The event is by invitation to the Top Winning 20 dogs in each AKC breed and variety for the year 2001. Another unique feature of the event is the focus placed on the breeders who dedicate their lives to improving their favorite breed(s).  This recognition came in the form of a special competition to select the best dog in each breed that is owned and shown by its breeder.  Another special attraction was the Breeders’ Showcase, in which the owners of some of the top winning dogs from 1995 to 1999 were invited to bring their dogs back into the ring for another night in the spotlight.

The public was invited to talk to breeders at the AKC Meet the Breeds exhibit.

Junior Showmanship competition was limited to juniors between 10 and 18.  In order to qualify for the Classic the Juniors had to garner several wins in Junior Showmanship at other shows throughout the year and the must have carried a 3.0 GPA over the previous two grading periods.

The seven variety groups, junior showmanship and the selection of the Best in Show award will be televised by Animal Planet on February 2, 2002 at 8:00 p.m.

The day following the Classic was the Central Florida Breeder Showcase Sweepstakes/Obedience Trial.  This event suffered many absentees because breeders who had no intention of coming to the event themselves entered puppies that they expected their handler to be able to show -- obviously not understanding that the whole point of a breeders' sweeps was that the *breeder* was to show the puppy him/herself!

December 13th, 14th and 15th were regularly scheduled shows held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds located approximately 3 miles from the Classic show site. These shows had very disappointing entries in Boxers, only making a major (in dogs) one day, and that major was broken.  Additionally, only two specials from the Classic stayed for the following shows.

This AKC/Eukanuba Classic show was a grand presentation geared for the general public. Every opportunity was taken to acknowledge the breeders, to promote purebred dogs, performance and obedience dogs, and a special tribute to the canine Search and Rescue Teams for their heroic efforts at ground zero, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania following September 11th.

Please plan to attend this spectacular event next year on December 11th in Orlando , Florida !
