Pat and I are dedicating this issue of the BU to the memory
of Wendy Wallner, DVM – longtime friend, boxer breeder, and veterinarian
extraordinaire. Though she was on this earth for only a brief time, Wendy
had a significant impact on boxer health through her work for and
dedication to the American Boxer Charitable Foundation. Wendy served on
the Foundation’s Board of Trustees from the beginning and as Chair of
the Boxer Health & Research Committee for several years…as long as
her health permitted. Search the archives of the BU to see a small
sampling of Wendy’s contributions to health education for our breed; and
please join us at the 11th Annual ABCF
Dinner & Auction to celebrate the life of our “Dr. Boxer.”
“Canine
Genome Decoded”
Go to DVM Magazine at http://www.dvmnews.com/dvm/
to read about the biggest genetics breakthrough of this era – the
decoding of the canine genome by Harvard’s Broad Institute…with a
little help from “Tasha,” a fawn boxer bitch. Just click on
“Archives,” and then on the

issue. Consider the tremendous impact this research
will have on the ability of researchers to find DNA markers, perhaps even
“cures” for hereditary diseases and conditions; then come to the ABC
and listen to a talk by Dr. Kirsten Lindblad-Toh, a leading researcher at
the Genome Project. Dr. Lindblad-Toh may be working with the ABCF and CHF
(AKC Canine Health Foundation) in the near future on research on several
genetic diseases that afflict the boxer – among them, Renal Dysplasia,
Lymphoma, and Degenerative Myelopathy. Stay tuned for BU coverage of Dr.
Lindblad-Toh’s ABC presentation.
